Weekend volleyball update: Hazel Green sweeps Rocky Top Classic in Tennessee

Hazel Green won eight matches to sweep the Rocky Top Classic volleyball tournament in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

The Class 6A third-ranked Trojans (24-6) beat six Tennessee schools, including Maryville in the title match, and also downed Class 6A Pelham and Class 3A fifth-ranked Carbon Hill in the tournament.

Senior setter Lauren Lasater contributed 115 assists, seven blocks and 23 digs for the Trojans while senior libero Kayla Kennemer added 72 digs. Senior outside hitter Brooke Sanford provided 49 kills and 45 digs, junior middle Tierra Porter had 31 blocks and 32 kills, and junior outside hitter Maci Battle added 33 kills, 19 blocks, 24 digs and nine aces.

Class 6A second-ranked Hartselle (16-5) fell to Maryville in the semifinal round. The Tigers beat Tennessee schools Grace Academy, Sequoyah, Dobyn-Bennett, Marion Senior and Wilson Central along with Central (Va.).

Megan Zuck led the attack with 68 kills, and 31 digs while Jordan Finn had 31 kills and 22 digs, Gabrielle Bili had 134 assists, 19 kills and 18 digs. Lexi Smith had 39 kills, and 10 blocks, and Maggie Anderson had 60 digs and nine aces.

Carbon Hill (25-2) finished tied for fifth with a 4-2 record. The Bulldogs lost their first match of the season during pool play, falling to Sale Creek (Tenn.). They beat James Clemens before falling to Hazel Green.

Ricki-Jill Burrough had 44 kills and 23 digs while Abby Gibson had 34 digs, Alyssa Dutton had 11 aces, 29 kills and 20 digs, Lacey Evans had 33 kills and 79 digs, and Molly Kate Atkins had 47 digs and 117 assists.

In other action:

Battle of the Bay: Class 3A top-ranked Bayside Academy downed second-ranked Montgomery Academy to win its own championship.

Ansleigh Dailey contributed 17 kills and 137 assists while Lauren Chastang had 65 kills, 37 digs and nine aces. Brantley Rhodes had 13 aces and 42 kills, and Ariel Dulaney had 35 kills and 12 aces.

Class 5A top-ranked St. Paul’s (15-3) was 4-2 at the tournament, beating Montgomery Catholic, Homewood, Addison and Oak Grove, but losing to Class 7A No. 10 Murphy and Montgomery Academy.

Konner Wilks had 80 digs in the tournament.

Baker (7-13) was 3-3 at the Battle of the Bay, beating Washington County (Fla.), Robertsdale and East Central (Fla.), and losing to Enterprise, Montgomery Academy and Class 6A fifth-ranked Daphne.

Addison Genard led the team with 49 kills, 15 aces and nine blocks, and Abby Allen had 12 assists, eight aces and 54 digs. Cassidy Smith added 37 kills, 14 aces and 33 digs.

Murphy (13-5) was 4-1 in the tournament, beating St. Paul's, Addison, Montgomery Catholic and Homewood. Bentley Odom had 34 kills and 10 blocks while Kristian Marshall had 81 assists.

Class 4A fourth-ranked Trinity (12-8) was 3-2 in the tournament, beating Central Forsyth (Ga.), East Central Mississippi and Alma Bryant. The Wildcats lost to Bayside and Montgomery Academy.

Lucy Williams had 18 kills, Mary Conley Teel had 11 kills and seven blocks, Allie Dillard had 11 kills and five blocks, and Drue Walker had 61 digs.

Class 2A top-ranked St. Luke’s (16-8) was 1-4 in the tournament, beating Class 1A top-ranked Addison, but losing to Daphne, Oak Grove (Fla.), Niceville (Fla.) and Washington County (Fla.).

Brooke Threlkeld had 42 assists, Kellan Hensley had 70 digs and Elizabeth Thompson had 26 kills.

Class 6A fifth-ranked Daphne was 4-2 and won the Silver Division at the Battle of the Bay, beating Washington County (Fla.). Daphne also beat St. Luke’s, Homewood and Baker, and lost to Oak Grove and Niceville.

Sydney Omtvedt had 41 kills and six aces, Bri Turner had 37 kills, Natalie Omtvedt had 28 kills and Haleigh Houser had 86 assists.

Enterprise was 3-2 at the tournament, beating Baker, Robertsdale and Washington County while losing to Montgomery Academy and Bayside.

Alex Wiggins had 43 kills, 27 digs and five blocks while Morgan Kyles had 36 digs and 13 aces and Olivia Thompson had 41 assists.

Sandy Hunter Invitational: Class 3A seventh-ranked and host Pleasant Valley (17-0) downed sixth-ranked Geraldine to win the tournament. The Raiders also beat Sylvania, Westminster Christian, Boaz and Sacred Heart.

Cammy Cochran had 31 kills and 34 digs while Anna Bryant added 28 kills and 51 assists, Alisa St. John had 22 kills and 34 digs, and Madison Bentley had 29 digs.

Class 1A third-ranked Donoho (11-4) was 3-1 at the Pleasant Valley tournament. The Falcons beat Crossville, Class 4A eighth-ranked Saks and Faith Christian. Geraldine beat the Falcons.

Madison Gaines provided 37 kills and eight aces while Katie Brown had 52 assists and three aces.

Catholic Cup: Host McGill-Toolen was 4-2 at the tournament, beating St. John Paul II, Marist (Ga.), Mount Carmel (La.) and Archbishop Hannan (La.). The Class 7A top-ranked Dirty Dozen lost to St. Pius X (Ga.) and champion St. Thomas Moore (La.).

Kenya McQuirter was named to the All-Tournament team with 43 Kills and six blocks while Grace Schmerbauch had 25 digs, Jaylen Daffin had 25 kills and 34 digs, Kirsten Carter had 27 kills, Shauntai Battle had 25 kills and 13 blocks and Lillie Fromdahl had 88 assists.

East Coast Challenge: Class 7A third-ranked Huntsville (17-6) was 2-3 in the Stuart, Fla., Tournament. The Panthers beat John Carroll of Florida and Central Florida, but fell to South Fork, Lake Worth Christian and Jupiter defeated Huntsville 28-26, 14-25, 15-9

Jaden Flint had 30 kills and 26 digs while Savannah Combs had 39 digs, Drew Hales had 19 kills, 21 blocks and seven aces, Hannah Barrett had 44 assists and Sabrina Duncan had 42 assists, 27 kills, 16 digs and seven aces.

Class 7A ninth-ranked Grissom was 2-3 at the Florida tournament led by Shelby Holderfield with 22 kills in three matches while Grace Spotswood added 34 assists and Celia Thompson had 24 digs.

Amelia Rhodes Set Off Tournament: Straughn (10-0) beat host and Class 1A ninth-ranked Kinston for the championship. The Tigers also beat Pleasant Home, Clas 2A No. 10 New Brockton, Opp and Class 2A ninth-ranked Goshen to reach the title match.

Hannah Lawless provided 46 kills and 20 aces while Sarah Langford added 81 assists and 11 aces. Ashley Hughes had 30 kills and 13 blocks, and Sydney Kinsaul had 35 digs.

Jemison Invitational: Shelby County downed Jemison, Montevallo and Thorsby to earn the title.

Anna Wood had 11 kills and four aces while Jesse Allen had 10 kills and three aces. Dayli Wood had 10 kills, Libby Ziegler had eight kills, Haley Howard had 31 assists, and Lexy Cardwell had 11 digs.

NEWS & NOTES

Pleasant Valley’s Anna Bryant returned to sports action this week after an April craniotomy.

Bryant was struck by a softball while in the dugout in April and experienced bleeding and swelling in her brain. Doctors removed a piece of skull to clean out the blood clot and fix the artery then used screws to close her up.

The junior was in the hospital for a week and missed the remainder of the school year.

Dad David is the softball coach and mom Dana is the volleyball coach.
