Juanita Boddie Tournament highlights weekend high school volleyball

Plenty of tournaments will be played during the opening weekend of AHSAA volleyball action, highlighted by the 34th annual Juanita Boddie Tournament at Hoover High School.

There are also tournaments at Briarwood, Montgomery, Carbon Hill, Albertville and West Morgan among others.

Some of the top teams in the state compete for the Boddie title.

Class 7A is represented by nine of the AL.com ranked teams with No. 1 Huntsville, No. 2 McGill-Toolen, No. 3 Mountain Brook, No. 4 Hoover, No. 5 Oak Mountain, No. 6 Grissom, No. 8 Vestavia Hills, No. 9 Spain Park and No. 10 Bob Jones.

There are three No. 1 teams in the field with Class 7A top-ranked Huntsville, Class 6A top-ranked Spanish Fort and Class 3A top-ranked Bayside Academy.

Pool play in the 40-team tournament starts at 4 p.m. today and continues on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. Elimination play starts at 1 p.m. with the top two teams from each of eight pools advancing to the Gold Bracket. The bottom two teams in each bracket advance to the Silver Bracket starting play at 1 p.m. The championship is scheduled for 6 in both brackets.

Briarwood Serve-Off Tournament

Briarwood Christian hosts 16 teams in its annual tournament with Class 5A No. 1 Lawrence County the highest ranked team participating. Other ranked teams include Class 6A No. 8 Walker and No. 10 Clay-Chalkville, Class 5A No. 3 St. Paul’s, No. 4 Alexandria and No. 8 Briarwood.

Four pools of four teams each begin Saturday at 8 a.m. and continue through 1 p.m. Following pool play, all No. 1 seeds will be placed in a four team bracket as will No. 2 seeds, No. 3 seeds and No. 4 seeds.

Mayor’s Cup

The annual tournament will be held at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex with several ranked teams competing, including Class 4A top-ranked St. James, third-ranked Jacksonville, fifth-ranked Trinity and ninth-ranked UMS-Wright.

Class 3A second-ranked Montgomery Academy — the tournament host — along with third-ranked Providence Christian and No. 10 Cottage Hill will also compete as will Class 7A seventh-ranked Murphy and Class 6A seventh-ranked Pelham.

The top two teams in each of four pools of five teams will advance to the Gold Bracket while the No.3 and No. 4 seeds advance to the Silver Bracket.

Pool play starts at 4 p.m. on Friday and continues at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The last pool play match starts at 2:30 p.m. with elimination brackets to follow.

Bulldog Invitational

Carbon Hill will host the 11th annual tournament on Saturday with pool play starting at 8:30 a.m. with 16 teams in four pools. Elimination play in Gold and Silver brackets begin at 2:30 p.m. with championships scheduled for 5:30.

Participants include Class 3A fifth-ranked Carbon Hill and Class 1A second-ranked Meek, last year’s defending class champion.

Albertville Invitational

Three pools of four teams each begin play on Saturday at 9 a.m. with the final pool play match scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Elimination play pits No. 1 seeds and team with the next best record in the Gold Bracket. The remainder of teams will be seeded for play in the Silver and Bronze brackets.
