McGill-Toolen was once the team to beat in state volleyball.

The Dirty Dozen have more championships in the state’s biggest classification, 19 titles, than any other school and dominated the sport with seven titles in eight years 1999-2005.

McGill won to the Class 7A championship match last season before falling to two-time champion Mountain Brook.

McGill lost on opening night this season to the Spartans, but rebounded to win the next nine straight and capture last weekend's Juanita Boddie title.

For the first time since 2013, the Dirty Dozen are No. 1 in AL.com rankings.

Other No. 1 teams are Class 6A Spanish Fort, Class 5A St. Paul’s, Class 4A St. James, Class 3A Bayside Academy, Class 2A St, Luke’s, Class 1A Addison and AISA Coosa Valley. All but McGill and St. Paul’s were preseason top-ranked teams.

Huntsville headed the Class 7A preseason rankings, but fell to McGill in the Boddie semifinal. The Panthers are No. 2 this week while Mountain Brook and Hoover stayed in the next two spots. Vestavia Hills rounds out the top five.

Only Coosa Valley remains unbeaten (8-0) among No. 1 teams while several other ranked teams are undefeated.
