State high school volleyball update: Bob Jones beats rival Grissom for 2nd time this season

Class 7A eighth-ranked Bob Jones played only one match this week, but it was a big one.

Bob Jones downed ninth-ranked Grissom 3-0 on Tuesday, marking the second straight win for the Patriots this season over the Huntsville area rival.

The Patriots (11-8) were led by Emma Jarrett’s eight kills and five digs while Juanita Monerio-Pai added six kills and seven digs, and Alana Cox provided five kills and four blocks.

Aija Abele set up the hitters with 21 assists and Karmahn Hall led the defense with 17 digs.

The Patriots play in a Panama City, Fla., tournament this weekend.

In other action:

Class 7A top-ranked McGill-Toolen (22-5) beat Florida’s Pensacola Catholic, but fell to Class 3A top-ranked Bayside Academy. Grace Schmerbauch had four aces and 23 digs while Lillie Fromdahl had 66 assists and 15 digs.

Class 7A third-ranked Huntsville (19-6) beat Grissom and Hewitt-Trussville as Hannah Barrett had 29 assists and seven aces, Sabrina Duncan had 17 assists, 14 kills and nine aces, and Jaden Flint had 20 kills.

Class 7A fifth-ranked Vestavia Hills (13-6) beat Shades Valley and Thompson as Anna Langley had five aces, 15 digs and 12 kills, Emma Grace Harris had 20 digs, Avery Kampwerth had four aces and 16 kills, Katie Larson had 30 assists and Manon Burris had 36 assists.

Class 6A second-ranked Hazel Green (27-6) beat Class 4A third-ranked Danville and Muscle Shoals this week. Brooke Sanford had 29 kills, 13 digs and six aces while Tierra Porter had 21 kills and 10 blocks.

Class 6A sixth-ranked Albertville (20-1) won four matches, downing Southside-Gadsden, Oneonta, Cullman and Randolph.

Miranda Munroe had 99 assists while Lauren Martin had 50 kills, 10 aces and six blocks, and Shelby Burch had 22 kills.

Class 6A eighth-ranked Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (18-1) beat American Christian, Northside and Paul Bryant this week.

Marlei Murray had 39 kills, 18 digs, 10 aces and 30 assists while Demaurea Moore had 34 kills and 24 digs, and Jordan Norris had 22 kills and 19 digs.

Class 6A ninth-ranked John Carroll (8-6) beat Bessemer City and Northridge. Sophia Ragusa had 25 aces and 30 assists, Mary Catherine Hart had 18 aces and 11 kills, and Morgan Adamson had 15 kills.

Class 6A No. 10 Chelsea (12-4) beat Class 5A second-ranked Alexandria and Class 7A Tuscaloosa County, but fell to Helena.

Lexie Riggins had 23 kills and 28 digs while Ashley Mock added 22 assists and 24 digs.

Class 6A Helena (8-6) beat Mortimer Jordan, Huffman and No. 10 Chelsea this week as Jen Brown had 21 kills.

Class 5A top-ranked St. Paul’s (16-3) beat Class 7A No. 10 Murphy behind 17 kills, 16 digs and three blocks by Parker Canada while Konner Wilks added three aces and 25 digs. 

Class 5A fifth-ranked Guntersville (12-13) beat was 4-0, downing Fort Payne, Scottsboro, Cedar Bluff and ninth-ranked Crossville.

Tori Bentley provided 28 kills while Kacie Wisner had 75 assists, Beth Buckelew had 34 digs and Jordyn Garmon had 11 aces.

Class 5A eighth-ranked Hayden won four matches, beating Southeastern, Mortimer Jordan, Hanceville and West point.

Harlee Kate Reid led the attack with 58 kills while Isabella Johnson added 118 assists and 13 aces.

Class 5A No. 10 Briarwood Christian was 1-2, beating Brookwood and losing to Clay-Chalkville and Tuscaloosa County.

Alex O'Brien had 16 assists and 13 digs while Grace Patterson had 10 kills and five blocks, Natalie Crumpler had 10 kills and 15 digs, and Anna Donohue had 24 digs.

Class 4A top-ranked St. James (13-5) beat fourth-ranked Trinity and lost to Class 3A second-ranked Montgomery Academy.

Sydney Stone had 20 kills, Carson Ann Crow had 17 kills and 24 digs, and Lindsey Sampson had 31 digs.

Class 4A seventh-ranked Wilson (8-5) was 1-2 with losses to sixth-ranked Deshler and Florence and a win over Rodgers.

Maria Mask had 19 kills and 18 digs while Tori Walker had 14 kills and 21 blocks, Taylor Brown had 32 digs and Kayla Gooch had 48 assists.

Class 3A ninth-ranked Straughn (12-0) beat Slocomb and Brantley as Hannah Lawless provided 29 kills for the week.

Class 3A No. 10 Cottage Hill downed Mobile Christian behind 11 kills, 16 digs and five aces from Gracie Clark while Callie Jones added nine kills and 25 digs. Kahlen Hughes had 42 digs and five aces, and Jasmine Vo had 28 assists and 16 digs.

Class 2A top-ranked St. Luke’s (17-8) beat Class 4A ninth-ranked UMS-Wright behind seven kills from Camille Hunt while Kellan Hensley had 15 digs and Lauren Bailey had 10 assists and four aces. 

Class 2A fourth-ranked Hatton beat R.A. Hubbard, East Lawrence, Class 3A seventh-ranked West Morgan and Sheffield, and lost to Class 5A third-ranked Lawrence County and Class 3A third-ranked Lexington.

Kendal Crowell had 15 blocks while Emma Latham had eight blocks and 14 kills.

Class 2A fifth-ranked Westbrook Christian (16-2) was 5-0 this week with wins over Collinsville, Cherokee County, West End, Spring Garden and Gaylesville.

Courtlyn Barber led the attack with 80 kills and 15 aces.

Class 2A sixth-ranked Altamont (8-1) beat Hueytown, Fairfield, Vincent and Indian Springs this week.

Ashley Sharff provided 55 assists, 27 digs and 26 aces while Claire Lynton had 32 kills, nine blocks and 19 digs, Marinna Dorolek had 22 kills and 37 digs, and Lucy Pless had 45 digs.

Class 1A second-ranked Decatur Heritage beat Priceville and Westminster Christian, but lost to Class 5A sixth-ranked East Limestone and Class 5A fourth-ranked Brooks.

Kayla Grimes had 45 kills and 17 blocks while Kaitlyn Cheatham had 73 assists.

AISA second-ranked Macon East beat eighth-ranked Lee-Scott as Madisyn Kennedy had 14 kills and five blocks, Sami Nesbitt had 17 kills, and Bailey Williams had 16 kills.

Houston Academy (7-4) beat Rehobeth and Wicksburg as Anna Kirkland had 33 kills and 20 digs, Anna Beth Freeman had 28 kills and 38 digs, and Ashlyn Conner had 91 assists.

Alma Bryant (12-8) was 3-0, beating Mary Montgomery, Williamson and Davidson.

Rebecca Moore had 10 aces, 17 kills and 50 assists, Valerie Ainsworth had seven aces and 16 kills, and Brenna Stringfellow had 17 kills.

Sparkman (9-8) beat Clements, Athens, Buckhorn and St. John Paul II as Jasmine Brooks had 37 kills and eight blocks, Dailyn Hereford had 23 kills and Leighanna Tralongo had 60 assists.

Clay-Chalkville (9-6) was 2-1 with wins over Center Point and Ramsay while losing to Hewitt-Trussville.

Jaliera Thomason had 132 assists, 43 digs and 12 aces while La'Cherrie Harris had 78 kills, 14 blocks and nine 9 aces, Mekaila Hill had 47 kills, 33 digs and seven blocks, and Raven Omar had 74 digs and 17 aces.

Kaylee Kirschten had 15 digs and 11 kills in two matches for Theodore this week.

Hokes Bluff (3-5) beat Sardis and lost to Class 4A eighth-ranked Jacksonville. Tylynn Register had 32 kills, Kendall Johnson had 20 kills and Margaret Wetzel had 43 assists.

Berry lost to Northside and beat South Lamar 3-2 as Paige Cupit had 33 kills, 11 digs, and eight aces while Jacey Smith had 21 digs.
