Borquist and Herbst honored All-American, three others All-Region

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has released their All-American and All-Region teams for the 2014 season. Five State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) athletes have been honored. New Paltz' Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y. / Rhinebeck) has been selected as Third Team All-American and her teammate Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y. Webster Schroeder) has been selected as honorable mention . Fredonia's Jessica DiChristopher (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / West Seneca East) was honored on the Northeast Region team. While Cortland's Mary Kelly (Guilderland, N.Y. / Guilderland) and New Paltz' Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y, Warwick Valley) were honorable mention picks. Zwickl was also named as the Region Freshman of the Year.

Borquist the junior outside hitter was named as the SUNYAC Player of the Year earlier this month. She is also a three-time All-SUNYAC honoree. She is the first non-Honorable Mention All-American in New Paltz history. This season she led the SUNYAC and also ranks 43 rd in the nation in kills per set (3.74). She averaged 3.22 digs per set, 0.38 blocks per set, 0.30 service aces per set, and 0.18 assists per set.

Herbst the senior libero had a great season with her defensive efforts. She had an average of 5.10 digs per set, which ranked third in the SUNYAC. She also added .50 assists per set, .036 service aces per set and .010 kills per set. She was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team this season. This is Herbst's first-ever All-Region honor.

DiChristopher who has been playing the entire season with an injury, finished second in the conference this season in total kills with 351, and kills per set with 3.05. 

Kelly led the Red Dragons in multiple categories; she had 254 kills, a .300 attack percentage and 127 blocks in 35 matches.

Zwickl is the seventh overall SUNYAC Rookie of the Year and first-ever Regional Freshman of the year for New Paltz. In the SUNYAC, she ranks second in assists per set with 9.16, and 10 th in the conference in service aces per set.
